masters

today when i arrived at TAC to swim, the big pool we normally swim in had all the lane ropes removed and the deck that sometimes splits the pool in half (for SCY) was about 5m from the edge. the water level was a little low and they had all the valves turned on high. so we had to swim in teh WARM up pool. i asked marty why that pool was set up that way and he said, dead serious, syncronized swimming. hmmmm. i kinda sort of believe him.

P-R

P-ersonal R-ecord

as in had one in the pool this morning. fridays are fast at TAC, and well when i arrived this morning there were a ton of swimmers on the wall. 2 things stood out immediately - one: there was a guy with a black swim cap with the US flag and his name on it. like the ones they wear at the olympics. holy cow. two: bri was in the slow lane. ruh roh. so my lane choices were very fast, lightening fast or super sonic. the good news is we jumped over and made our own lane. i learned, sort of, how to butterfly kick on my back. kind of feels like im having a ceasure so might need to work on that a bit. but the main point today was the "surprise" at the end. 3x 100 for time. long story short, when i was coming back to the wall i hear marty yelling 128, 129 and i thought CRAP. that is slow. slow. especially when US cap guy is breaking a minute. BUT *lightbulb* my smarty lane mate pointed out that i was leaving 10 seconds behind the original group so my times were actually 118 -119. so that is huge for me. HUGE. i'll say it again HUGE. my previous best (while doing the chicken wing) was 121. so maybe just maybe i'm learning something from all the barrel blogs and feeling water frenzies and well just plain swimming more this year.

P-hoto R-etouching

i was in NY this week (many of you saw the travel fiasco on FB... but no need to go into that here...) meeting with our ad agency. they took us on a studio tour and we got to see one of the industry's best photo retouchers. this lady is magical. really. she showed us the before and afters. she can remove an entire piano from a photo and recreate stucco. NOT EASY. even jennifer garner, fully made up by a professional, great lighting, great photographer gets things done. her neutrogena ads - well never beleive what you see. this lady eliminates pores, brightens eyes, evens out lips, fills in wrinkles, crops ears, gives them a haircut.. you name it. she even adds in the make up! they shoot them "bare" faced and she adds in the colors depending on the season or product line. crazy.

P-rotesting R-efridgerator

ours is. it punked out monday night. or possibly earlier. i had noticed the frozen veg getting a little soft and told bobby. its fine he says. ummm ok. monday afternoon i came home for lunch and well even the frosty paws were somewhat tropical. after moving all the important stuff (ie maple view farms chocolate milk) to the fridge in the garage i called bobby. "i'll take a look at it". long story short after a quick glance and a short conversation with one of his maintainance guys at work we are getting a new fridge. probably not one of the fancy bottom freezer door ones that i want though. but at least something that will keep my smart dogs cold!

P-uppy R-etrieval

yep left the girls out front un attended when i was cleaning out the gu wrappers from my car. 30 minutes later and a few "wonder where the girls are" panic struck till we found them on the back side of the fence on the greenway checking out the newly cut down weeds. oooooopppppsss!

P-retty R-eady

to get out of here today. long week. made even longer by afore mentioned trip to ny. no one is here today (we get the option to FLEX on friday if we take short lunches during the week). sooooo after a botched attempt to watch office re runs with a co worker and booking a hotel for an upcoming trip (FUN trip though yippie!) and sending out a few trillion emails (to friends of course) i'm pretty much ready to hit the road... and get the weekend started...

some cool pics to take the edge off the nastiness that is summer in the south (and well apparently everywhere lately!)

what a weekend

after getting called out for skipping masters on friday morning (though i will state for the record that it was not on my schedule for the week!) i went to the somewhat but not entirely nasty golds gym pool and did my own little workout. was happy to see my 100 times have come back to my normal pace (thats SLUG for most of you though!)but more importantly i think i'm cured. hallelujah!! its about time.

friday my hard drive crashed at work - first thing- so i was left with out a computer and well nothing to do. ok so maybe i could have organized or something.. but thats lame. so i did a few work errands (yes they were related directly to my job!) and then took a long lunch to catch up on nothing- but a very satisfying nothing- then headed back to the office for a meeting. see i wish my job was like this all of the time where if i maybe dont have a lot to do i can leave for a while.

saturday i headed out west a bit to ride with Bri and Alysia. we had planned this so called ice cream ride a few weeks ago and i was really looking forward to it. well assuming Alysia would not get us lost.. hmmm...

we drove about 30 minutes outside of raleigh and parked at the infamous maple view farm store. oh wow. knowing this is waiting for you at the end of any ride makes it well worth the time.

we were really out in the sticks.. tons of super tall corn fields and of course some barking dogs running really fast looking like they want to knaw on a bikers limb... we stopped alot for pictures...probably more than we should have.. but how often do you pass by a real life POW WOW? and one that smelled like funnel cake...

this photo took meticulous planning and three real attempts before working out. its logistically pretty tough to self take a photo of all three of us riding down the road, when A you're not exactly sure when the camera is clicking, B one of you has to actually press the button and then do a major U turn and C you have to balance the camera on a very rickety mailbox. coordination is fantastically intricate...and only made more difficult with the prospect of laughing so hard you fall off your bike...

it was all worth it for probably the best ice cream and chocolate milk i've ever had. cookies and cream and mocha.. mmmmmmmmmm. even brought a jug of milk home for the week. truly solely for my recovery needs-- only. ha!

today i followed bri and kara (another fasty) around turkey creek trail for oh about 11 miles... some serious hills, hills that are not only steep but seemed to keep getting longer and longer. those and the fact that it was about 95 degrees out and 300% humidity... lead to one tired chick.... BUT

there was shopping to do... so off to the mall. its tax free weekend here in NC. which people seem to freak out over a bit to much. i mean really when you think about it you are not saving that much money.. unless you're buying a computer or something.. but definately not worth getting riled up over..

anyway the weekend is over. booo... BUT that does mean its one weekend closer to the start of football season.. so depends on how you look at things.. perspective.

off to eat some taco salad for dinner.

normal

never thought i wouldnt want someone to tell me that. but per the doc, thats what i am. thyroid, iron, liver, heart, big toe, left elbow, texting speed, reading comprehension, cartoon intake.... well you get the point. i have to laugh a bit though as some of the amateur diagnosis from friends/coworkers have been pretty entertaining - here are a few:

pregnant. by far the most fun and the most not true. no babies here.

stress. ok now if you know me you know how outlandish this is. i mean my job is white fluffy cotton. i come home for lunch every day and spend a lot of time on facebook. so clearly it is not stress.

ingesting a meat product-- that would in turn lead to long term food poisoning in a sense. unless i was completely drunk (which i havent been) and eaten an entire pepperoni pizza i'm kinda sure this isnt the reason.

swine flu. ummmmm no. having not been to mexico, nor puking my brains out, think i'm pretty safe here.

Hula-hoop Intestine - yes that is maybe an actual disease. but i dont think thats me... if you google it you also come up with some beauts like "art attack" when someone becomes sick in the presence of a masterpiece, "cutlery craving" the desire to eat your fork...

so - alas - looks like me and ben had the same week so far.. though i just have this feeling mine is fixing to get a whole lot better. the power of positive thinking. i'm just going to dive right back into my normal life, my normal schedule and see how it goes. i'll either come out on the right side or well, i'm not opposed to spending more time in my pajamas...

and finally, after reading damie's post about her 2 love-able canines.. i got to thinking about mine (which isnt much of a stretch since they are usually close to my mind..) and how, well they are totally NOT BFF's...well at least not out in the open. i think they each secretly harbor love for each other but it comes out via grumpy grunts from smokes (left) and sly bone stealing from madison (right). but they are never far from each other, maybe just not sharing the same bed, ok well unless its mine...

when is it my turn?

so i debated about writing a RR from saturday seeing that i only "raced" about 2 hours of the 70.3. but in light that most times writing for me is a good way to get stuff out that i cant normally say - maybe it will somehow help.

some photos from the weekend just to warm up a bit...

taking a dip the day before. i never imaged lake michigan to be so beautiful. the water was cystal clear and clean and crisp.

start of my swim wave. first time for me jumping thru waves to get out to the first buoy. i have to say though, this has been my favorite swim of all time.

coming in on the bike. i do still love my bike.

so the tale begins on thrusday night or actually i will start with wed night when it was 9 pm and i realized that i didnt have as much stuff together as i thought i did and that included packing up my bike. hmmm normally not such a tough task.. but new bike + new case = some what of a conundrum... the bike didnt fit. so we took the seat off. still too tall. ummmmmmmm. so after having what i deemed a heart attack and bobby's suggestion of just bring your road bike instead... we had the ingenius idea to shave down the block that the frame sits on in the bottom of the box (its an upright case). presto! fit in there perfect.

so thursday. first of all. cheers to southwest for always having the nicest most friendly people working for them. and only $50 to ship your bike. my only complaint is the open seating. i totally disagree with it and think it only leads to boarding anxiety as people have to ask permission to sit in a seat ... sucks... anyway flight to midway and off we go to check into the (dont be jealous) roadway motel. yes. i booked it. it was cheap and close to the airport. driving over there we got off the interstate and suddenly were in a very desolate and industrial part of chicago... finally seeing the neon of walgreens up ahead like a light of salvation- we turned into the bates.. er i mean roadway.. motel and true to form there was the shady check in with the blinking "office" sign. i knew if they gave us a regular key instead of an electronic one we were hightailing it to the nearest hampton inn... so we go to #19 and actually it wasnt that bad. dare i say it was actually not even close to the worst place i have ever stayed. clean. comfortable and breakfast the next day. nice.

friday we got up and drove to benton harbor. not realizing that the hour we lost going to chicago we got back going to michigan. stopped by and got my packet and then drove to the race site for a quick swim. at this point i will mention that i'm feeling good. the best i've felt in about 2 weeks so i was pretty excited. swimming that day was actually FUN. though i felt a little stupid putting on a wetsuit with people sunning on the beach. but the water temp was about 70 so just chilly enough to warrent one. i tried to practice swimming out into the waves and getting thru the breakers to the first buoy. then checked out transition and headed to the hotel.

we again lucked out with a gem of a place about 20 minutes north of the race site. and as fate would have it, a brand new super wal mart was right next door. we headed over there and did some food shopping for lunch and dinner. i hate to say it as i know some will cringe, but i'm not a big eater outer. i much prefer simple food that i know i like and doesnt have all the hassle of going someplace. got the bike ready and packed up for an early morning. went to bed feeling like i was ready to have a good day.

saturday am - everything went as it should. i spent a bit too much time setting up my transition and by the time we started the 1.2 mile walk down the beach to the start i only had about a 15 min run and no trip to the john... figured that was going to have to wait. arrived at the start with about 15 minutes to spare and watched the earlier waves go out. went and said hi to beth and we walked up to the start. waves were 7 minutes apart which i think was a bit too long. i think some people must have waited about 80 minutes from teh pros to start (the highest wave i saw was 11 but there may have been more...)

so GO! i took off behind the first line of girls and just went for it. it was pretty tough for me to sight since every time i looked up all i saw was the crest of a wave so i tried to guage by the people around me - which as the swim went on was harder as it thinned out. i did find some feet for a brief period but that was tough to stay on since the waves kind of flopped yo uaround a bit. but i did like jen said - just go with the waves and it worked. i stayed just over my comfort zone and when i came out of the water and saw 32 on my watch i was pretty happy. the toughest part of the swim had to be exiting the water and then running up the sandy beach.

t1- pretty good. had a bit of trouble with the timing chip leg of the wet suit but managed to get it off and head out on the bike. for the first 2 hours i felt great. good speed. good turn over. nutrition on. i was riding back and forth with one of the girls on beths MAO team so i figured i was doing pretty good :) but then - well its kind of hard to explain - but like in the ER when they say "things started to deteriorate quickly" well that was me. it wasnt really bonking but more of a slow down. like letting air out of your tires with a slow leak. the last 18 miles of the bike was straight into a pretty stiff headwind and i was having a lot more trouble than i should have fighting it. i kept thinking "man florida was not this hard. and i'm in better shape now"... so what had started as a great ride went south, but i thought i could still salvage something with a good run. and i still had high hopes for the run since i was running better off this bike. and i attributed my slow down to the wind.

t2- pretty good though i dropped a gel and went back for it, not sure why...

the run. pretty early on i knew something was way off. the first 1/2 mile was flat and i thought just get your legs back and then lets go. the course turned left and went up a long hill. i had a bit of trouble getting up it and thought as soon as i got to some flatter roads i would be fine. nope. without going into the details the run turned into a walk and i could not even make myself start running again. i was so deflated and felt like my brain was not connected. cause i was thinking pretty clearly and pretty clearly not happy. i just kept telling myself get to the next mile marker. telling my legs to turn over. i still had the plan to pick it up at mile 7 for the last 10 k. i really fought it, i kept thinking is it the heat (nope! it actually got colder as the day went on). is it nutrition? (nope! pre race and on the bike were spot on). i will say i have never wanted to quit something so badly in my life. i honestly didnt know how i was going to make all 13 miles. i finally hit mile 11 and told my self no more walking. i literally had to force myself from stopping, even on the down hill. that involved a few choice words that im' sure my fellow racers were wondering about...i've felt spent from effort and i've felt tired from a long race, but this was different.

anyway - thats enough. i went to the doc today and will hopefully get a good answer- soon. thanks everyone for your support over the past week and especially after the race sat. its so tough to go through all the training and the time and then come race day you dont get the chance to see what you can do.
